Facebook photo lands Pearson facilities manager in hot water

WINSTED — A photo of Pearson Middle School’s facilities manager that turned up on the Facebook Web site is likely to land him and the secretary who took the picture on administrative leave, Superintendent of Schools Blaise Salerno said Thursday.

Greg Delaney, who oversees maintenance at the school, was photographed by secretary Francine Shandra as he sat outside an administrator’s office.

In the photo, he is holding a piece of paper that reads “CT Number 000000” in a manner similar to that of a mug shot. Representatives of the state’s Department of Public Health visited the school Thursday to look into recent complaints over asbestos in some of the school’s floor tiles.

Susie Basso, who is the same parent who originally raised the asbestos concerns, said she saw the photo on the secretary’s Facebook Thursday, and claims it was coupled with a caption that sarcastically suggested he would soon be taken away to prison by authorities.

“This picture is a joke. This is making fun of the whole situation,” she said.

Basso said she called Principal Clay Krevolin to complain about the photo soon after seeing it. Krevolin could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Salerno said he had been notified about the picture, but was not familiar with the specifics surrounding the situation.

He confirmed that the secretary had been placed on administrative leave Thursday, and said Delaney would likely also be placed on leave Friday after he completed some scheduled work on emergency lighting at the school Thursday afternoon.

“All I know is I am awaiting the written (complaint). She has been put on administrative leave until I end up getting the answer,” she said.
Basso said she was upset by the picture because of the recent safety concerns at Pearsons, which were spurred by an electrical accident that injured a teacher on Feb. 11.

During a public comment sessions at a Board of Education meeting held Tuesday, numerous residents said they were worried by conditions at the school, and voiced support for increased funding for maintenance across the district.

“No matter what, this picture should not have been taken of him,” Basso said.

A message left for Delaney at his home was not returned. Shandra’s number is unlisted.
