Facebook Smart Phone ♥

Facebook Smart Phone

Facebook, struggling to make money out of its growing mobile audience and under fire over its share price plunge, is taking a third shot at building a smartphone of its own.
It has reportedly hired more than half-a-dozen former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone, to create its own smartphone software and hardware, as it reacts to the growing threat from the mobile web.
The Facebook smartphone is scheduled for release by next year. The planned launch would open another front with internet search leader Google which is already into hardware via its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility earlier this week.
A foray into the smartphone hardware business could help Facebook counter Google’s move.
Facebook, which last fortnight floated on the Nasdaq stock market, has also just launched its own mobile app store.
The App Centre currently offers links to Facebook-enabled apps within Apple’s iOS and Google Android stores but developers will soon be able to write apps to be placed exclusively in Facebook’s store.
The first attempt at smartphone, in 2010, was scrapped when the firm realised the difficulty it would face turning itself from a software developer into a hardware maker. Another effort, in cooperation with the Taiwanese smartphone firm HTC and codenamed “Buffy”, is still under development.
With its new, hand-picked smartphone engineers, Facebook is now reportedly going “deeper into the process, by expanding the group working on Buffy, and exploring other smartphone projects too, creating a team of seasoned hardware engineers who have built the devices before”.
The migration of web users to smartphones and tablets was named in Facebook’s regulatory filings for its recent flotation as one of the main threats facing it as a business. It currently makes no meaningful revenue from mobile app users, who are growing in number more rapidly than traditional website users.
Meanwhile the smartphone market remains dominated by Apple, which has integrated Twitter into iOS, and devices running Android, a mobile operating system created by Google, Facebook’s main advertising rival on the web.
“Mark [Zuckerberg] is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future, then Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” a Facebook employee told the New York Times.
Facebook is reportedly aiming to keep its latest smartphone effort as secret as possible, by headhunting individuals rather than advertising vacancies on the team. Facebook has seemingly learned from its 2010 experience and is focused on recruiting hardware specialists.
A Facebook spokesman is reported to have said: “We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers.”
The company’s desire to enter the smartphone market could be a result of increasing pressure to improve the potential of mobile to make money.
In a statement for potential investors ahead of its initial public offering earlier this month, the company admitted it had concerns about more users accessing Facebook through their mobile -- a trend which could make it more difficult to sell advertising.
“Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social,” the statement read.
“We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

Man fined over Facebook insult to ex-girlfriend

A man has been ordered to pay £165 for calling his ex-girlfriend an offensive name on Facebook, in one of the first cases of its kind.

Darren Mattox, 29, admitted posting a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court.
He used the word in a posting to ex-girlfriend Ashleigh Speed.
He wanted to see his baby son, born last October after their three-month relationship ended in April.
Magistrates were handed printouts of messages sent by Mattox to Ms Speed, her father and her sister, but they were not read to the court.
The Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said: "There have probably been only a handful of cases resulting from offensive material either on Facebook or YouTube."
A spokeswoman for the Magistrates Association said: "Its certainly not a common offence. I haven’t come across it in the 20 years I've been sitting as a magistrate, but I imagine it may become more common."
Mattox, unemployed, of Acton, Wrexham, admitted the offence. He was fined £65, plus £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Justin Espie, prosecuting, said he had wanted contact with the baby and on November 29 was issued with a harassment order because he was ‘constantly texting’ Miss Speed.
He said: “Around February 12 this year the victim’s sister said that the defendant had made contact with her on Facebook and the victim also received a message. The message was brief but clearly of a harassing nature. He claims he just wants to see his baby.”
Rod Williams, defending, said: “Mattox went to see his son at hospital – that is the one and only time he has seen his son.
“He became increasingly angry and frustrated and it’s because of this that he has posted these messages.”
After the case Mr Williams said: “There was a whole background of animosity. The comment certainly wasn’t particularly abusive or offensive. He basically made a posting calling her an offensive name.”

Facebook photo lands Pearson facilities manager in hot water

WINSTED — A photo of Pearson Middle School’s facilities manager that turned up on the Facebook Web site is likely to land him and the secretary who took the picture on administrative leave, Superintendent of Schools Blaise Salerno said Thursday.

Greg Delaney, who oversees maintenance at the school, was photographed by secretary Francine Shandra as he sat outside an administrator’s office.

In the photo, he is holding a piece of paper that reads “CT Number 000000” in a manner similar to that of a mug shot. Representatives of the state’s Department of Public Health visited the school Thursday to look into recent complaints over asbestos in some of the school’s floor tiles.

Susie Basso, who is the same parent who originally raised the asbestos concerns, said she saw the photo on the secretary’s Facebook Thursday, and claims it was coupled with a caption that sarcastically suggested he would soon be taken away to prison by authorities.

Facebook photo lands Pearson facilities manager in hot waterThe picture has since been removed from the Web site.

“This picture is a joke. This is making fun of the whole situation,” she said.

Basso said she called Principal Clay Krevolin to complain about the photo soon after seeing it. Krevolin could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Salerno said he had been notified about the picture, but was not familiar with the specifics surrounding the situation.

He confirmed that the secretary had been placed on administrative leave Thursday, and said Delaney would likely also be placed on leave Friday after he completed some scheduled work on emergency lighting at the school Thursday afternoon.

“All I know is I am awaiting the written (complaint). She has been put on administrative leave until I end up getting the answer,” she said.
Basso said she was upset by the picture because of the recent safety concerns at Pearsons, which were spurred by an electrical accident that injured a teacher on Feb. 11.

During a public comment sessions at a Board of Education meeting held Tuesday, numerous residents said they were worried by conditions at the school, and voiced support for increased funding for maintenance across the district.

“No matter what, this picture should not have been taken of him,” Basso said.

A message left for Delaney at his home was not returned. Shandra’s number is unlisted.

Facebook Criticized for Loose Online Privacy Norms

Facebook Criticized for Loose Online Privacy NormsFacebook, one of the most visited social networking websites, is facing serious charges concerned with the online safety norms. The founder of Facebook commented that users do not look forward to privacy in online services. Daily Mail after an investigation disclosed that teenagers registered on Facebook were being advanced more often by men asking for sexual favors within minutes of logging on to the website. The Home Secretary has suggested Facebook to start embracing Ceop button to help to curb child abuse.
A spokesman for Facebook confirms that the use Ceop button would not be of much help to its online security system and there is a probability of its not coinciding with the reporting buttons it already has on its website. He further said, "We work closely working with police forces in the UK and around the world and have trained staff on two continents giving 24 hour support in 70 languages."
